Protection
I finally took the tags off my couch that were dangling off the side and it reminded me of something.
You know how when you buy some new electronic gadget and it has that thin protective plastic over all the shiny parts? Keeps all those parts shiny and protects it from scratches. But isn’t that stuff intended to be taken off once you receive the product? That’s one of the first things I do when I get something that has it on it, but I know people that keep that stuff on for as long as possible. Does everyone keep that stuff on?

like the film on a new iPod? Nooo, that's meant to be removed before even using the thing.
Just like a condom!
I mean-
I generally leave it on if it doesn't bother me. I like to keep the screen protected and whatnot. If it starts to bother me I take it off.
My family likes to keep that stuff on. I'm rebel for enjoying products the way it was intended.
Doesn't it make it harder to clean? Dust cling on to plastic film like hobos on ham sandwiches!
(I have dust allergy, so I'm very upset about dust-prone materials.)
I hate that annoying film. When I first buy an electronic, I'm like "Oooh I should leave that film on." Then, three seconds later, it's off and I don't care about the consequences.
Just like a condom!
I mean-
The people I know who leave that stuff on are like serial consumerists and I tend to think they leave it on to remind them that they bought it and it was new and shiny and so on.
Hurray, the comments on this site are intelligent and not YouTube-like.
Drew/Justin, I think you should make it so that people can add comments like this to the cartoons as well as the news posts.
As compulsive as I am, there is no way to prevent myself from taking off the protective film on electronics. Sometimes, however, I feel guilty and try to stick it back on, only resulting in disappointing air bubbles and small adhesive smudges. So in trying to fix my problem, I usually make it worse. I'm a real genius.
actually i have so much fun taking em off and then when i do im like…. dam i wanna do that again
so needless to say i actually end up putting the thing back on to just pull it off again……and again and again and …………….again, then i usually put it on my mirror when i have like a thousand just piled up for when i get bored
xD hell no i dont
its much more fun to take that stuff away and let it be SHINYYYYYY
I leave it on until I want to see something shiny. Shiny, clean, dark screen…it sucks though, cause a day and a half later the screen is ruined.
I leave it on until it starts to get scruffy or dirty itself. This saves you a cleaning cycle!
hahaha sooo true
question Drew or Justin…
how often is updated occasionally?
I leave that shit on as long as humanly possible, and my husband gets cranky at me for it. I got a new laptop back in April and I've had the thick film covering the outer lid on since I got it. It's half peeled back in both outer corners and is only half attached, and it looks like crap, but I don't want the shiny easily-smudged prettiness of the actual cover to get..smudged. It's a sticky situation.
Also, with my iPod, I left the sleeve on until I got a case, and it went STRAIGHT in the case. That thing has not been directly touched by human hands since it went in the box.
My DS has screen protectors, same deal, went on the day I bought it and haven't come off.
I'm a slob in all other aspects, but anal about my technogoodies.
I usually take those things off… My DS Lite doesn't have a touch screen film though. I'd like one there in this case :).
Wait. i thought those things contributed to the product's overheating perspective. because. that kinda plastic just seems absorb heat and help my phone or whatever it is heat up faster. i know they're nice for protection's sake though.
i wish they made protective films for babies on planes, because i done hate a baby on a plane…. even more so than snakes on a plane.
Che: Whenever some random thing pops up in our minds, it will hopefully find a place in this blog =)
I bought a PSP a while back, but I can't even remember if it had that protective stuff on it. I'm just going to assume that it got ripped off the instant I saw it =P
My subconscious is usually taking that plastic thing off while my conscious is still thinking about whether or not I should leave it on.
No regrets!
I usually rip it straight off. Only thing i've left it on so far is the pick guard on my new bass.
I have a Hewlett Packard 3 in one printer, scanner, and copier, its now about 4 years old……it STILL has the plastic on the top to protect the lid you lift to copy. However, the edges are starting to curl up somewhat….do you think its time to take it off? Or, should I let more circular drink cup stains accumulate before removing?
i take that stuff off straight away. it donesn't bother me to get a few scratched on cell phone/ ipod/etc. i also hate it when people dont take it off and after a while the plastic film gets all wrinkly from the heat of the product. and then it get all dusty inside the wrinkles. its gross.
yay!!!! well drew / justin or Drustin in the ye old language of guevarian keep the randoms thoughts up and make sure the comics get updated every so often as its the only things that gets me through my study for the hsc!
I have that kinda thing for my keyboard. I never take it off! Always wanna make sure it has protection, don't wanna give it a virus now…
(the intended joke was semen being ejaculated onto my keyboard and I *hypothetically* having STD's give my computer a virus)
I had two roommates that didn't know you could pull the stuff off. One day I removed the plastic from the microwave oven and the guy who owned it was shocked that his ugly-as-sin microwave had been replaced by a new one. It was too late for other roommate's toaster however (it had melted on).
For those that love to protect their screens, but despair over the cheap plastic that eventually peels off, try this: Go to walmart in the sewing section and find some 3mil vinyl. It costs about $4 for a meter square, which should be enough to coat every glass surface you own twice over. Cut it to size, and just before you're ready to stick it on, clean the surface and then apply a VERY thin layer of water. Stick the plastic on, align it, squish out the air bubbles, and then let it dry. The hydrostatic pressure of the water will keep it on until you intentionally peel it off. I've had a PSP with it on for almost two years, and my cellphone still has a brand new bezel under it's protective layer. Plus, this stuff is way cheaper and easier to deal with than anything you can find at the electronics store. Enjoy! (edit: not LHT justin)
one time i removed the cover from my roommates tivo, he literally screamed at me and started throwing things, i promptly squished it back on and ran
i hate it when people leave that on, example
99% of motorola razr users dont know that the motorola logo is SILVER not blue, the blue is protective plastic thats meant to be removed, r-tards.
I definitely have seen that razr one several times =)
wow i still can't get over the fact that we are all talking about plastic!!
lol my mates still has the blue moto lago hahahahahahah im gonna laugh at him!
With this many replies it might almost be worth creating some kind of forum for this site. *shrug*
Forum!
Yes, if there was a forum, I'd be posting this there:
Joe totally ripped off the first scene of the first episode of Stella.
"If you guys don't shut up I'm going to run this car into the next telephone pole!"
"do it michael!"
"yeah, do it michael!"
"fine! I will!"
(crashes into telephone pole)
I love that there's an iPod product, called "Crystal Film" for $20 so odd dollars – it's NEW and EXPENSIVE protective film that replaces the original crappy, gummy film.
And yes, I was suckered into buying it.
I remove it immediately. Just like I immediately remove the stupid dealer sticker from any car I buy. Lord knows I don't want to give free advertising to "Bob's Chevy Car and Truck Depot on Route 40" for years and years. Do people not realize that those stickers come off too?
a lot of them don't come off very easily. The ones that are made of metal.
lol i had a guy from a car yard just randomly walk up to my car and put on one the other day…. needless to say it got pulled off
i got a new watch today and the film came strait off the face and my mum was like WTF U DO THAT FOR and i was like "coz only faggots leave it on" and she got annoyed =]
i personally think that anyone that leaves the plastic on should be devoured by a hoard of angry squirrels. LONG LIVE THE SHINY!
